Aero

Aero is a truly international Bounty. The original aerated chocolate bar, it took just one year after the snack’s 1935 debut in England to land on shelves in New York.

Despite the Nestle branding, Rowntree’s (acquired by Nestle in 1988) was the mastermind behind Aero. Kit-Kat and Smarties are amongst the other heavy-hitters that were poached in the acquisition.

Aero is a delicate Bounty and must be stored properly. Under high temperatures, the bar’s cavernous structure will collapse on itself, effectively voiding its entire identity. Such was famously the case during the 1983 London heatwave.

Despite the best efforts of several confectionary companies, this type of aerated chocolate has never taken hold in the US. Perhaps American consumers are sufficiently betrayed by the amount of air in a bag of chips and the idea of air in their chocolate is a violating one.
